2. Access & Point-of-Sale (POS) Control
Entrance/Exit Monitoring: Standing at "front-of-house" to act as a visible deterrent and checking receipts when alarms are triggered.
Staff Checks: Conducting searching of staff bags and lockers as part of internal loss prevention protocols.
High-Value Item Protection: Ensuring "big-ticket" items (electronics, jewelry) are correctly tagged and secured.
3. Safety & Emergency Management
Crowd Control: Managing large groups during sales events, e.g. Black Friday or emergencies to prevent stampedes and chaos.
First Aid & Fire Safety: Serving as a first responder for medical incidents or fire evacuations within the shopping center.
Hazard Identification: Reporting spills, blocked fire exits, or faulty equipment that could lead to "slip and fall" lawsuits.
4. Reporting & Liaison
Evidence Collection: Preparing written statements and digital evidence for police and insurance claims.
Court Testimony: Appearing in court or at disciplinary hearings to testify regarding theft or misconduct.
Minimum Requirements
Mandatory Legal Requirements
PSIRA Grade C Registration: Most retailers require a minimum of Grade C. While Grade D is for basic guarding, Grade C is required for roles involving access control, retail "floor walking," and computer-based reporting.
Valid PSIRA Certificate: You must have an active, up-to-date PSIRA registration card.
Clean Criminal Record: Retailers perform strict background checks to ensure there are no prior convictions for theft, fraud, or assault.
2. Education and Skills
Minimum Education: A Grade 12 (Matric) Certificate is mandatory for major retail chains (e.g., Shoprite, Woolworths, Pick n Pay).
Language Proficiency: The ability to speak, read, and write English fluently is essential for writing accurate incident reports and interacting with customers.
Basic Computer Literacy: Required for operating CCTV systems or digital visitor/stock logging tools.
3. Physical and Personal Attributes
Physical Stamina: You must be capable of standing or patrolling for long shifts (often 12 hours) on hard retail floors.

4. Preferred (Bonus) Requirements
